Beach weddings are commonly thought of as the most romantic weddings possible.  However, if you are considering having your wedding on a beach, here are some important considerations to keep in mind to help ensure your big day is pure romantic bliss and not an “America’s Funniest Home Videos” clip.

Is your wedding going to be right on the beach?   If so, the tide will be something you need to consider.  As romantic as the beach is, neither you nor your guests are probably thinking of getting married IN the water.  Having the tide come up as a guest into your wedding is only romantic if you planned it that way.  On the other hand, having the water half a mile away from you at low tide can make a beach wedding seem a lot less fun and a lot more sandy.  Planning your wedding time around the tides isn’t difficult to do, but it is important to set the right atmosphere and tone for your beach wedding day.

Since most beach weddings are an outdoor affair, having an alternate plan in case the weather turns unpleasant is another important factor.  Tents or umbrellas can be an easy way to relieve your worries about rain, or perhaps even having a substitute location in case the weather is really bad.  For indoor weddings, it’s nice to have a beautiful day, but not as vital.  When you are planning on spending the day outdoors, watching the skies becomes a necessity.  Are you planning on having many elderly people attend your wedding?  Accessibility to your wedding site could be an issue you need to think about.  For example, how will you get Grandpa Joe’s wheelchair onto the beach?  Informing your guests beforehand of the terrain so they can dress accordingly (i.e. no high-heels on the sand) will allow your guests to be comfortable at your wedding.  Thinking beforehand of the small details that make people feel welcomed will allow your wedding to be a huge success.

The photography is another consideration you should keep in mind.  Outdoor photography can be stunning, but it is completely different from indoor photography.  Make sure to let your prospective photographers know you are planning on a beach wedding and ask to see samples of their work done outdoors.

One of the advantages of having a beach wedding is the lack of “venue expense” as most beaches are public property.  The disadvantage to this is that you have no control over who else is sharing the space with you.  Having a plan of what to do in case of total strangers trying to attend your wedding is an important consideration for a public beach wedding.
